[LOCALS ONLY]: Top 5 Staples of the Portland Fashion Scene
Truth be told, I have a love affair with all things Portland fashion. Why? Because there are no wrongs in the game. The “Keep Portland Weird” theme that has defined the identity of this notorious Oregon city translates in the most admirably unique ways. The quirkiness of Portland is best embodied the edgy, inspirational trends that walk the streets while passing food carts, locally-owned coffee shops and craft breweries. Here are five of my favorite fashion brands that call the Rose City home. Each has their own unique feel and contributes to the variety of perceptions the Portland people have towards fashion and style.
1.) Sseko Designs – I stumbled across Sseko while reading The Oregonian on a Sunday morning in 2012, and since then I’ve been captivated by this brand and their mission. Sseko works with talented women in Uganda to create ethically manufactured products. These opportunities allow their team in Uganda to obtain employment opportunities so that they may pursue college-level education. While their merchandise is exceptionally pretty and whimsically lovely, it’s also remarkably authentic.
2.) Perspectives Global – Perspectives Global is a fashion forward brand that has perfected the minimalistic look. It’s use of black and white establishes an effortlessly modern look that is to die for. In addition to their edgy look, Perspectives Global strives to cultivate a sense of community by exchanging stories that bring people together. A win-win.
3.) Portland Gear – Portland Gear is suitable for everything that is the Pacific Northwest. Adventures, hikes, the outdoors. The shirts, socks, hats, sweatshirts and bags are fashionably simple, extremely adaptable and proudly Portland. Suitable for every day wear, PG has harnessed the most iconic characteristics of this city in to something tangible.
4.) Wildfang – Admirably rebellious. That’s what comes to mind when I think of Wildfang. A bold and bad ass brand, Wildfang promotes empowerment by adopting a tomboy approach that’s executed through graphic tees, beanies and even suits (ah!). So incredibly daring that it ignites an indestructible flame of confidence that cannot be put out.
5.) Frances May – Founded by a grandmother-granddaughter duo, Frances May is everything elegant. A curation of unique brands, Frances May appeals to the chic, sophisticated women and “strives to bridge the gap between form and function, trend and timelessness, elegance and edge” (quote from FM website – worded too perfect not to include here). The classy, high-end boutique is perfectly plush.
