Millennial Mindset / NYC Street ART
We are the youth of a nation. We are Generation Y, better known as Millennials. We are a generation unlike any other. We have been shaped and formed with strong influence from the highly evolving tech industry and the employment obstacles we face. We have been called narcissists due to our selfie culture and unwillingness to conform to menial nine to five jobs. We want instant gratification and we need to always be growing and stimulated to pledge loyalty to anyone or anything.
But with that said, we take the cake for being one of the most adaptable and accepting generations to date. We believe in accepting all kinds of people, no matter their lifestyle choices.
Many of us have adopted a nomadic lifestyle due to the fact that we simply cannot set up roots anywhere. With the housing market in major cities inflating prices to the point of making the prospect of buying a home a faint dream, we make the world our home and carry our lives on our backs. This lifestyle exposes us to so many people, cultures, and ways of living.
We take a job based on the challenges and creativity it provides, not because we are tied down and forced to settle. Many of us wait much longer to settle down with a family because we still feel there’s so much adventure to be had. Our generation has not had the advantages of stable work environments afforded to previous generations. Employers are constantly cutting corners leaving us to fend for ourselves. We have built a generation of hustlers and entrepreneurs, wheeling and dealing to achieve the life we want. In the process we have grown stronger, more agile and creativity rules our lives.
We care less about money and put our passions before security. Older generations don’t always understand us but we know that a life is only worth living if done so on your own terms. While we are the most tech savvy crew to date, some of us have gone old school and used modern day hieroglyphics to convey our message. In my travels to NYC I have come across powerful and thought provoking words and street art transcribed by our generation. With words on the street, our message can no longer be denied.
